Emergency workers arrived but couldn't save Joss. He died at the scene.

Husband Says It Was a Hate Crime

Joss's husband, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, posted on Facebook that this was a homophobic hate crime. He wrote:

"When we returned to the site to check our mail we discovered the skull of one of our dogs and its harness placed in clear view. This caused both of us severe emotional distress."

Gonzales says a man then approached them, yelled homophobic slurs, and shot Joss. He believes his husband saved his life by pushing him out of the way.

Years of Threats

Gonzales says they had received threats for over two years from people who didn't accept their relationship:

  • Neighbors had threatened to burn their house down
  • They reported these threats to police multiple times
  • Their house did burn down in February
  • They lost everything, including Joss's childhood home built by his father

"He was murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving each other," Gonzales wrote.
